Learn with us the art of Self Reliance

Welcome to one family's attempt to become more self reliant. At this point in our journey, we are far from realizing our goal and it should prove to be entertaing to watch us work our way through the maze of problems that families are facing in these difficult times. It is an opportunity for you to watch, learn and give feedback to help us and others become self reliant.

Lower Utility Bills

It is one thing to say that we are reducing your energy usage and another to prove it. That is why we decided to publish our real-time energy usage hourly to prove that energy can be saved while still being comfortable. It is not our goal to live in a freezer in the winter or sauna in the summer so we thought it might be productive to record the temperature and humidity of our home (inside, outside and the attic) as we implement our energy saving strategies. This is a real life energy conservation program. Will it work? Let's look at the numbers together and figure what works and what doesn't.

Healthly Living

Maintaining good health and becoming self reliant go hand in hand. We will share with you our experience with diets, allergies, exercise and other health issues involved with raising a familiy. You will have a chance to comment on our philosophies and perhaps even show us a better way. Sign up for the Self Reliant Newsletter and be notified when a new article is ready for your consideration.

Organic Gardening

At this point in our journey, food is by far our highest cost. We like to eat!. Part of the reason it's high is because we put more emphasis on the quality of the food than most. With the latter being uncompromised, join with us as we learn how to reduce our food cost by growing most of what we eat. At this point, we have a large garden and we are still surprised that our grocery bill hasn't decreased as much as we thought it would. Stay tunned though, we are not giving up. We will be expanding our gardens next year in hopes of meeting our demand for food. Our success hinges on how we are able to handle the food problem. Keep updated with our articles and hopefully web cams later in the year.
